Like Water for Chocolate: Book vs. Movie. Pros: Stays true to the book, good, basic "star- crossed" love story. Cons: Cheesy acting, bad casting, horrible English dubbing, confusing if you haven't read the book. First off let me start by saying, if you read the book before watching the movie, chances are you are going to be disappointed.

Second off, if you are planning on watching this movie dubbed in English, don't. The voice- over acting is horrible. Stick to the subtitles.
And lastly, if you didn’t enjoy the book, you won’t enjoy the movie. Now, as far as the plot goes this is a story of true love and passion. Tita is the youngest of three daughters who has found the love of her life with a young man named Pedro. The two want to marry to each other, the only problem is a family tradition. According to tradition Tita , because she is the youngest daughter in the family, must take care of her mother and not wed anyone until her mother dies. Tita’s mother (Mama Elena) refuses to make any exceptions for Tita and will not allow her to marry Pedro.
But as you'll see when you watch our new video tape, this Filipino martial. Water & Steel Training Camp. Inside Datu Kelly S. Worden's Natural Spirit Training.
She is forced to take part in the family tradition. The story goes on to chronicle Pedro and Tita’s struggle to be together. They are faced with many challenges, including interferences from Mama Elena, Pedro marrying another woman, and Tita’s romance with another man. Although the movie does a good job of staying true to the book’s storyline, the film version just comes of as being cheesy.
Personally, I expected more out of the movie. The acting was too big. Also, the magic realism in the book was somewhat convincing, but how it was portrayed on film was just not easy to swallow. And let me take a moment to reiterate my point, do not watch this movie in English, the dubbing is horrible. Watch the movie in its original version with English subtitles. The acting is much more effective this way. Another thing that really bothered me was that the mother didn’t look Mexican at all.
She had a fair complexion and reddish hair. She wasn’t at all believable as Tita and her sisters’ mother. So my advice is, if you’ve run out of movies to rent at the video store, or you’re looking for a different type of movie, this movie is ok, it’s not great, but it’s not horrible. Other than that, don’t expect a whole lot from this film.
Although it was given an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film it just doesn’t live up to the hype. If you have nothing better to do on a Friday night and you’re looking for a basic romantic movie to kill time go ahead, rent Like Water for Chocolate, but don’t expect too much.
